Summary:
As part of the research program The Future of the Religious Past, the international conference Things: Material Religion and the Topography of Divine Spaces was held in Amsterdam during June 2007. In 21 essays from that gathering, social scientists and scholars of religion and philosophy cover anxieties about things, images and incarnations, sacred artifacts, bodily fluids, public space, and digital technologies. Among their topics are one African genealogy of dangerous things, deus ex machina and other theatrical interventions of the supernatural, how the common practice of counting one's beads reveals its secrets in the Muslim communities of North Cameroon, the affective power of the face veil between disgust and fascination, and online gaming between spiritual experience and commodity fetishism.
