- Summary:
- This study offers an in-depth analysis of the decline of the Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) and the subsequent domination of the British Empire in Asia. Author Nierstrasz (Europe's Asian Centuries Project, University of Warwick) takes a new approach to the topic, blaming internal corruption and the corruption of the VOC's servants. The study draws on new access to VOC correspondence and the private correspondence of VOC servants, gained through Towards a New Age of Partnership (TANAP), an educational and archival preservation program uniting scholars in Asia, Africa, and Europe, and notes discrepancies between VOC and Asian accounting books. The book includes chapter-length case studies of India, Ceylon, Batavia, and the Coromandel Coast. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
