- Summary:
- This collection of essays looks at themes of leftist and ecological radicalism in British literature. They are mostly focused on pre-WWII examples. Exceptions include essays on contemporary eco-criticism, eco-anarchism and the left, ecosocialism in contemporary Scottish writing, and Deleuze and Gautarri. They consider British literature as such, but also historical conditions informing certain writer's political commitments. They look at the work of Coleridge, Wordsworth, Hardy, Wells, William Morris, Fabian, Kropotkin, John Clare, and Ruskin. There is no singular definition of the Left advanced in the book, but in the editorial introduction the case is made that an umbrella of identities are rightfully called the Left. The contributors are professors of English from the UK and Europe. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
