Summary:
This book was based on papers given at the International Workshop on Higher Education Reforms in Mexico City in 2009. The focus of the collection is on the transformation of higher education into a commercial product that is talked about in terms of marketing and market forces, and expected to be controlled by them. Influence of the private sector and for-profit models have grown exponentially in colleges and universities. The book is a response. It is organized in four sections; the longest deals with the trend in the Americas, especially Mexico. Three essays look at Europe, and three at Asia (two on China and one on Japan). The concluding chapter looks at competing models and global contributions in contemporary higher education. Though the topic is of general interest, this is a specialty academic collection for academics in sociology and education, and especially academic professionals in higher education administration.
