- Summary:
- In the last of many books, ethnohistorian Burch (1938-2010) retrieves knowledge about caribou and human life in Alaska during the 19th century that many feared lost. For 15 years he gathered oral histories and written accounts, but left an unfinished manuscript when he died, and the knowledge would have been lost again but for a group of colleagues who assembled his sources. The book describes a complex nexus in which people hunt caribou and tend the reindeer they introduced, wolves prey on both caribou and reindeer, and caribou and reindeer compete for resources.
