- Summary:
- A collection of papers edited by Sabrina Ebbersmeyer, this book is the result of a colloquium of sixteen scholars from nine countries revisiting the ideas of early Modern philosophers about the emotions. The editor identifies the book as a response to recent interest in the philosophy of the emotions, and the need to reevaluate what the foundational philosophers of the Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment eras believed about the relationship between human reason and emotional life. Though the majority of papers are in English, a number are in French and two are in German. Single-paragraph abstracts of each paper are provided in English. The affiliations of the authors are not provided. The book is divided into four sections: the impact of Descartes' theory of the passions, exploring Spinoza's theory of the affects, transformation and critique of the mechanistic paradigm, and side glances and further developments, including an essay on the work of Thomas Hobbes. Of value to professionals and advanced students in the field of philosophy and the study of the Enlightenment. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
