Summary:
With 2007/2008 marking the two-hundredth anniversary of the formal abolition of the international slave trade by Britain and the United States, Gleeson (history, Northumbria U., England) and Lewis (world literature, College of Charleston, US) present ten essays that examine different aspects of the legacy of the slave trade. Topics include: the legislative and social processes by which the trade was abolished by both countries, the experiences of women and children slaves, continued forced migration after abolition, the spread of slavery to the American west after the abolition of the international slave trade, the impact of the abolition on the formation of racial identity in the United States, and the politics of memory in the commemoration of the abolition in Britain.
