Summary:
Noting the broadening global nature of musical materials and practices, Hijleh (music theory and composition, Houghton College) offers a theory of music that is global, rather than one that preserves cultural difference, category, boundary, or hierarchy. He proposes a practical approach to analytical understanding of music that is useful for a variety of musics and is applicable to music education, particularly at the college level. Drawing on math, ethnomusicology, acoustics, and human perceptual theory and including analytical examples in chapters, he explains the concepts and methods of a theory that focuses on the interaction of ?twos? and ?threes? as durational groupings and in terms of pitch relations. He explains how the theory applies to rhythm, melody, and harmony; how these elements interact to form texture, timbre, and other processes; and how these concepts and methods might be applied to composition, improvisation, performance, and music education in different contexts.
