Summary:
This collection of ten essays seeks to establish distance as a new approach for analyzing leadership. The essays argue leader-follower relationships ought to be considered in terms of psychological, physical, and organizational distance because distance itself is integral to our conceptions of self and other. The material is organized into three major sections. The first lays down conceptual foundations for both distance and leadership, the second hones in on the impact of distance on leader-follower relationships, and the last explores emerging concepts and extensions of leader-follower distance. Specific essays examine distance in a digital age, leadership approaches that work from a distance, women as leaders, Steve Job's leadership as both close and distant, tyranny and the exercise of power from a distance, and more. The contributors are mostly academics and students of psychology, both organizational and social, and workforce development consultants. Psychology Press is an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group.
