Summary:
Much of the passion and impetus of Augustine's early writings, as is well-known, stemmed from his previous belief in Manichaeism. In this notable and substantial study, Cameron (historic theology, U. of Portland, Oregon) presents an in-depth analysis of On Genesis, Against the Manichees and Augustine's early responses to the writings of Paul, as expressed in his Expositions of the Psalms, demonstrating in careful detail the development of Augustine's exegetical approach through the use of figurative reading of Biblical texts, particularly the interpretation of the Old Testament. Subsequent chapters continue the analysis in close readings of On Christian Teaching, On Instructing Beginners, and Against Faustus the Manichee. The result is a multi-faceted analysis of how Augustine read Scripture and by extension, how he believed it should be interpreted and taught.
