- Summary:
- Berger (Boston College) has assembled an ambitious survey of the images of the Dome of the Rock in Christian art. A sacred Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock was consistently interpreted by Christians and Jews as the Jewish Temple, despite the well-known destruction of the Temple in Roman times. The potency of the symbol of the Temple and its reinterpretation over the centuries in both Christian and Jewish art are described chronologically, beginning with the painting of the actual Temple, the building of the Dome of the Rock itself, then moving into re-interpretations in the art of Byzantium, the Crusades, European Renaissance, early Jewish books, and so on, concluding with 20th-century Mizrah, the wall hanging used in Jewish tradition to indicate the direction of prayer. The volume includes many color illustrations. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
