Summary:
In the aftermath of the Spanish military coup of 1936, insurgents occupied the town of Castilleja del Campo in southern Spain, killing 17 people and publicly humiliating nine women. Barker (University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) places a chronological narrative of the terror in the context of the history of Spain from April 1931 through the post-war years. Much of the book consists of oral histories and eyewitness accounts, interspersed with background and commentary, giving an account of the events from the various perspectives of politicians, union leaders, laborers, soldiers, a priest, relatives of men who were shot, and prisoners. In addition to oral histories, the book draws on documents, newspapers, and town archives. It is illustrated with b&w historical and contemporary photos and is distributed the US by ISBS.
