- Summary:
- In 1881-82, during the Land War, two innocent men--Patrick Finnegan and Constable Michael Muldowney--were convicted of murder based on the perjured testimony of informers, and spent 20 years in jail. The author, a descendent of Patrick Finnegan, draws on primary sources such as court and local government records and newspaper accounts to investigate the trial and the payments received by the informers. He gives details on the prisoners' lives in prison and what they did after their release. The book begins with background on the 'agrarian outrages' of the period. It is illustrated with b&w historical photos and illustrations. Finnegan is professor emeritus at NUI Galway. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS.
