Summary:
Daniel Cross Turner (English, Coastal Carolina University) has written a book on literary poetics, focusing mostly on the work of James Dickey, Robert Penn Warren, Charles Wright, and Yusef Komunyakaa. Though arranged as a book, it is functionally a collection of independent essays (one on the poetics of memory in contemporary Southern poets, for instance). Uniting them is the author's interest in how literary scholars might talk about the unique qualities of "Southern" writing, language, and voice in ways that include the wide range of cultures represented by writers in the American South. Though Turner is concerned with larger questions of memory and culture, the work here focuses on poetics in the narrowest technical sense; Turner's field is poetry, and the ideas about rhythm and language he raises are not applied to prose. This book will be of interest to scholars of English literature with an interest in 20th century American poetry or writing of the American South, and to poets and readers of poetry with a serious technical interest in poetics.
