- Summary:
- Tony Fielding (University of Sussex, UK) has written a thorough study of internal migration patterns in the UK. He concludes that the most important force driving people to move within the UK is economic, the second most important forces are social and political, and environmental reasons, though strongly highlighted in self-surveys and UK policies, are less important than these two. He notes strong effects of the class system and gender on migration, and that those who move tend to disrupt these limits and succeed socially. He also notes that those who have already succeeded socially are much more likely to move than those who have not and might benefit more by doing so. The first section of the book is highly empirical and describes known data on internal migration patterns. The second section is analysis of the forces that shape internal migration now and have done so in the recent past. The third section is theoretical and speculative; it looks at how migration might change if the environment in Britain remained the same, and how it is likely to change given predicted environmental changes in Britain in the future. The book is clearly written in an academic style. It is of specialist interest to demographic professionals and academics in sociology and economics.
