Summary:
Mattoni, a postdoctoral fellow at U. of Pittsburgh working in sociology, examines five examples of worker-mobilization and their use of media to make visible the increasingly precarious nature of work. This is a very exciting text in that it foregrounds worker organization as the impetus for social change. She considers how grassroots political organization and political communication intertwine, where social movement actors are seeking visibility, what it even means to gain political visibility, and the impact different styles of media relations have for worker mobilization. Her research is focused on Italy and took place between 2001 and 2006. It includes interviews, materials from social movements and protests, and alternative media texts about the events. Specifically, she looks at the Euro Mayday Parade of 2001, the Reddito per Tutt direct actions of 2004, the demonstrations against Ddl Moratti in 2004-2005, the Serpica Naro fashion show (a media hoax) of 2005, and the Precari Atesia strikes of 2005. A concluding appendix details her methodological considerations and data sources. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
