Summary:
Changing little but to add new bibliographical data, Hasegawa presents his 2010 doctoral dissertation at Tel Aviv University, which integrates biblical studies, Assyriology, and archaeology to examine a little-studied period in the Middle East. The dynasty of Jehu ruled the Northern Kingdom of Israel for about 90 years, he says, from the late 840s to the middle of the eighth century BCE, and five of the kings are known from the biblical text. He draws not only from biblical texts, but also non-biblical texts such as inscriptions and chronicles, and archaeological evidence. Aram-Damascus dominated Israel for the first 30-40 years of the dynasty, and only in the early eighth century did the kingdom regain independence. His narrative account takes the reigns in order. Maps, a chronology, and several indexes are provided. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
