Summary:
The letters collected here, written by a long-term member of the Union cavalry to his fiancée and later wife, are the only firsthand accounts to survive from the much-criticized Twelfth Pennsylvania Cavalry. The letters describe the chaos of guerilla warfare in northwestern Virginia and demonstrate that the skills of the Union cavalry improved over the course of the war; they also shed light on wartime romance. The letters are grouped in year-by-year chapters from 1861 to 1865, along with a chapter on the postwar years. An introduction gives background on Black's life before the war and the role of the letters in Civil War history. The book is illustrated with b&w historical photos. Coles teaches history at Longwood University. Engle teaches history at Florida Atlantic University. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
