Biography/History:
Renowned eighth-century Vedanta philosophical commentator is often arbitrarily assigned as the author of collections of short, poetical works, such as this hymn of praise (stotra) in manuscript colophons. Most scholars do not believe that such hymns were actually written by this author.
Summary:
Small manuscript to be used in private or public meditation or prayer is a hymn in praise of the highest philosophical principal, known as the Brahman, which is also referred to as saccitānanda ("existence, consciousness, and bliss") in the text. Attaining knowledge of this principal (brahmajñāna) is said to lead to release (mokṣa) from the cycle of life and death.
Notes:
Title colophon (f. 2v); alternate title Brahmanāmāvalīmālā from incipit (f. 1r).
Written in 11-9 lines per leaf.
2 leaves foliated 1, [2], upper left and lower right verso.
