- Summary:
- For many years archaeologists considered the Bronze Age societies of Northern/Arctic Europe as being on the periphery and a bleak contrast to what was going on in Central Europe and the Near East at the time. More recent research, however, has seen the period as one of increased globalization, and has shown that new types of societies and new modes of exchange and trade also emerged in Northern Europe. The essays in this volume are part of this new approach and offer new insights into the societies of Bronze Age Northern Europe and challenge many longstanding orthodoxies. The contributions reveal that there was considerable local variation and diversity within the Bronze Age societies of Northern Europe and that they were less isolated than previously thought, with clear evidence of communication, travel and contact not only with Central Europe and the Near East hut also towards the Far East. By bringing the experience of this neglected area into wider discussions of regionality, the hook is a significant contribution to the greater picture of the Bronze Age world. Book jacket.
