Summary:
Anthropologist de Jongh spent time living with and studying the culture of the Karretjie, or "donkey cart people." They are itinerant sheep shearers of the South African Karoo flatlands. According to de Jong, the Karretjie are the poorest of the poor in South Africa. They are poorly understood and invisible to most of South African society. De Jong explores the ethnic history of the Karretjie and looks at their current niche in South African society. He describes the daily life of Karretjie families, and the changes and challenges they face. The book is illustrated with beautiful color photos of Karretjie everyday life and families.
