Summary:
Linguists highlight some of the fundamental issues in the corpus linguistic approach, and throw light on patterns in present-day English from the cross-linguistic perspective, on stylistic trends in recent English, and on aspects of the rich variation and long-term changes characteristic of early English. Contributors were asked particularly to comment on the characteristics and potential of the corpus or corpora they used, and to consider how to communicate the benefits of corpus linguistics to researchers outside linguistics. Among their perspectives are textual analysis from philology to corpus linguistics, variation and change in stylistic norms in the 20th century, problems and strategies in historical pragmatics and corpus linguistics, a corpus-based study of prayers in the history of English, and the status of onset contexts in analyzing micro-changes.
