Summary:
Typed lecture notes bound in two volumes, apparently taken at lectures given by Alfred Dopsch, who was a professor of history at the University of Vienna from 1898 to 1937. The note taker is not identified. The notes concern the history of Austria from the Middles Ages through roughly the reign of Maximilian I (1496-1519), with particular emphasis on sources, and on early historiography. The latest date found cited was 1903 (vol. 1, p. 39). Presumably the caption title on the first page pertains to the work as a whole: Quellenkunde zur Geschichte Oesterreichs (The study of the sources of Austrian history). Under the title is a parenthetical reference to Dopsch's lectures: Nach Vorlesungen des Prof. Dr. A. Dopsch. The typescript has underlinings in blue pencil and occasional handwritten emendations. A prefatory section (32 leaves, paginated with roman numerals) concerns the Middle Ages. It begins with general research aids, listed in the style of a bibliography, under geographical headings, including Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia, and Poland (p. i-ii); the remainder of that section describes source documents for medieval history in the context of the chronology of events. The main body of the work mainly conveys a historical narrative while including references to sources, as well as citations of secondary literature. Volume 1 (p. 1-50) covers the time of the crusades until the early 13th century, with the last major heading pertaining to the founding of monasteries in Austria (Die neuen Klostergründungen; p. 34). Volume 2 (p. 51-127) covers the mid 13th century through the reign of Maximilian I, with a focus on the development of historiography (Die Historiographie von der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts an; p. 51). The last major headings refer to the age of Maximilian (p. 98) and to the independent historians during that time (Die selbstständigen Historiker; p. 110). The last author discussed is Sigmund, Freiherr von Herberstein, who died in 1566.
