Summary:
Larsson (politics and international studies, U. of Cambridge, England) studies how state authorities of Thailand responded to perceived external security threats from imperialist and, later, communist rivals in the realm of landed property rights. He argues that the Thai state manipulated property rights in land in an effort to maintain loyalty among land-holders against the "exit opportunity" inducements of rival systems. The state responded to the implications of principle of extraterritoriality embedded in the 1855 trade treaty with Britain and the threat of 19th century imperialism with the intentional underdevelopment of property rights institutions in order to discourage an international market in land. Much later, in response to the perceived threat from communism, they dramatically strengthened property rights institutions. Both of these responses were governed by the same logic, however; that being the discouraging of "exit opportunities" by land holders from the ambit of the Thai state.
