Summary:
'Effective multilateralism' and support for the United Nations rank among the key principles guiding the external activities of the European Union. To better understand and explain the EU's participation and position in the UN, the contributors to this book develop an interdisciplinary conceptual framework to systematically assess the EU's legal statuses and roles in contemporary multilateral global governance, prior to and after the Lisbon Treaty. Expert and policy-makers from EU and the UN apply this framework to eight topical cases of EU participation in UN human rights and environmental governance fora, yielding ample empirical insights into the Union's performance in and contribution to UN multilateralism. A cross-case comparison highlight recurring patterns of explanatory factors of the Union's performance, which challenge the conventional wisdom that the EU is by virtue of its alleged multilateral genes an apt multilateral player. The book concludes by setting the future research agenda on the EU in the UN system and offers concise policy recommendations to the EU's foreign policy-makers. Book jacket.
