- Summary:
- Retired public relations professional, newspaper journalist and magazine editor, and researcher, Lee(Clemson U. and the U. of South Carolina) grew up in Rhode Island, the state called home by African American soprano Matilda Sissieretta Jones (1868-1933). In this scholarly text, Lee traces the life and career of Jones, from her early years to how she became a singer; her rise to fame as a concert performer; as head of her own company, the Black Patti Troubadours, later the Black Patti Musical Comedy Company; and her retirement years. Lee's biography honors Jones by providing more details about her professional life and her place in the entertainment world of her day, than have previously biographers; explores the obstacles and limitations she faced based on her race; and examines the opportunities she maximized to become a famed, successful prima donna.
