Summary:
Cyr (emerita, music, U. of Guelph, Canada) explores the performance of French Baroque music, about 1680 to 1760, through its written and unwritten conventions from the vantage point of the string players who composed and performed it. The viol dominated string playing at the beginning of the period, she says, but after 1700 the violin family grew in popularity and came to dominate the musical scene by the middle of the century. She looks at sources and style in French Baroque music, bowed string instruments in French ensembles, interpretation and style in French music for string players, and composer profiles.
