- Summary:
- A medieval archaeologist with a particular interest in coastal towns, Clarke has also written an academic history of the city of Sandwich, which in the Middle Ages was an important port on the English Channel. Wealthy merchants built themselves substantial houses, she says, many of which are still standing. Often using photographs of such structures, she walks readers through the town's history from pre-settlement and the 11th-century town through the 16th century, with a postscript on the past five centuries.
