Summary:
The manuscript which is analyzed in this study, Durham A.IV.19, is a collection of Latin liturgical pieces which were translated word-for-word (in between the lines) into Old English by a provost named Aldred, at St. Cuthbert's monastery in the town of Chester-le-Street in the 10th century. In this painstaking study, Aldred's translation and additional glosses to the manuscript are examined, with surprisingly fruitful results, as Jolly (history, U. of Hawai'i at Manoa) reconstructs Northumbrian education, the political and religious position of Chester-le-Street vis-'a-vis the political power in Wessex, and the importance of Irish theology as a resource in Northumbria. Chapters are included providing a biography of Aldred and a description of the liturgical practice at Chester-le-Street. A complete transcript of the manuscript and its interlinear translation is included. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
