Summary:

A skillful treatment of a specialized subject, this book looks at the use of decorative plasterwork to aesthetically and socially define interiors in Ireland and early modern Europe. It is extremely well-produced, with abundant photographs in both color and black and white. These support the text and make it extremely clear to readers how important plasterwork was, and the level to which it was both a defining feature of spaces and a fully-developed sculptural art form. Many of the essays in this volume will be of value only to art historians and historians with a special interest in stucco or plasterwork. Several deal with the interplay of technology and aesthetics, and will be of value to readers with a strong interest in that subject. Some of the essays (along with the photographs) will be useful to readers with a strong interest in 17th-20th century European art or architecture and its history and cultural context. While this is a specialized book from a traditional art-historical perspective, readers interested in the history of the Ornament is crime meme will find these photographs illuminating as examples of exactly what "ornament" meant, and the essays useful for information about the class of professional artist-tradesmen who created it.
