Summary:

While there have been increasing calls for the protection of indigenous or traditional knowledge (TK) and for sharing the benefits derived from the exploitation of TK, the means with which to accomplish these goals remains a highly divisive and controversial topic. In this volume, Bubela (public health, U. of Alberta, Canada) and Gold (law, McGill U., Canada) present 11 papers that describe early efforts at defining and protecting TK nationally and internationally; summarizing the existing state of international negotiations over TK, including The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and The Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing; assessing the implementation and effect of national laws and policies to protect TK in Brazil, Kenya, India, and Canada; and considering non-proprietary approaches to protecting the TK interests of indigenous peoples.
