- Summary:
- When they called for papers, the editors posed questions, including the following: "Is literature a force for reconciliation and cross-cultural understanding or only an instrument for aesthetic pleasure of the privileged?" This volume contains a variety of responsive discourse--a selection of papers presented at the 14th international Triennial conference of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (Vancouver, Canada, August 2007). One of the four editors, Bill Ashcroft (U. of New South Wales, Australia) provides an introductory essay, which is followed by about 35 essays arranged under the themes of conceptual and methodological issues; imperial scholarship, race, and ethnicity; literatures of diaspora and migrancy; gendered bodies; indigenous literatures; Dalit literature and its criticism; the city; and terrorism, trauma, and loss. The other three editors are affiliated as follows: Ranjini Mendis (English, Kwantlen Polytechnic U., Canada); Julie McGonegal (English, Laurentian U., Canada); and Arun Mukherjee, author of numerous books and translator of Dalit writers.
