- Summary:
- Although not well known outside of Hong Kong and China, the "Big Spender" case, which ultimately resulted in the execution of criminal mastermind Cheung Tse-kueng, is a window into the legal issues surrounding sentencing in China for crimes mostly committed in Hong Kong. Wong (criminal justice, Xavier U., Cincinnati) explains how cross border issues raised in this case came to the fore and ushered in concerns about police cooperation and judicial assistance. He focuses on both the specific case study and all of the broader issues which arose for the first time in October 1998. Wong is a legal consultant with the government of Canada on Chinese policing and formerly worked as a police inspector in Hong Kong. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
