Summary:

In situ remains of mammoth bones and associated Mousterian stone tools were found at the quarry in the spring of 2002; agreements were quickly made between the quarry company, the land owner, English Heritage, and a funding agency so that excavations took place that very year between April and September. The site provided a rare opportunity to investigate questions of diet, land use, and habitat from deposits in a small geological feature and to subject the results to rigorous taphonomic and geoarchaeological scrutiny. The report covers the Lynford Middle Palaeolithic site; stratigraphy, association B, and dating; environmental evidence; deposit and assemblage formation; the archaeological assemblages of animals and lithics; and the Lynford Neanderthals.
