- Summary:
- A scholar of Italian and French culture of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Cole draws on the life and works of Florentine poet and patron Buonarroti (1568-1647) to explore cultural brokerage, court culture, and musical spectacle in early modern Italy. He was a great nephew of the illustrious painter Michelangelo as well as a renowned poet, she says, and was an influential protagonist in the literary, artistic, and musical circles of early 17th-century Florence and at other major central and north Italian courts. Her topics include the Buonarroti family fashioning a mythology in the shadow of Michelangelo, the Medici court from 1589-1608, and the Barberini court in Rome. The first volume contains the narrative; the second is devoted to appendices containing such material as a genealogical table, letters to and from him, known works of musical theater and performances, and texts of sung choruses. The two volumes are paged and indexed together. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
