- Summary:
- Stoddart (sociology, Memorial U. of Newfoundland) argues that we must examine skiing within the context of ecopolitics. Concentrating on the mountains of British Columbia, he uses concepts from the field of environmental sociology to examine social constructions of skiing landscapes by the ski industry, social movement groups, and the mass media; skiing as a site of interaction between humans and non-human nature; and skiing as a site of ecopower relations among humans and non-humans. A final chapter looks at how skiing is shaped by the social dynamics of gender, class, and race. Discussion encompasses the protests of the 2010 Winter Olympics, ski resort culture, and skiers as cyborgs aided by technology. The book is distributed in the US by University of Washington Press, and in Canada by University of Toronto Press. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
