Summary:
Liebmann (anthropology, Harvard U.) combines written history, native histories, archaeology, and ethnography to tell the story of the 1680 Pueblo revolt, its conditions, and its aftermath. Liebmann also looks at the era from the context of Native American cultural revitalization. For example, he discusses the Jemez province traditional "black on white" pottery, production of which ceased completely at some Pueblos after 1680, suggesting that the style was seen as "contaminated" by Spanish influence. Graphs, diagrams, and a narrative writing style aid in visualizing and understanding. This book would be of interest to those studying relevant areas of history, anthropology, ethnology, or Native American studies. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
