- Summary:
- The extremes of Antarctica's environment, seasons, and isolation have fascinated biologists for years with stunning examples of natural selection and adaptation. Unfortunately for Antarctica's plant and animal life, those very abilities may hamper their ability to adapt to climate change. The authors discuss the terrestrial and marine ecosystems of the region and the scientific and management challenges ahead. The book is in three parts: terrestrial and fresh water habitats, marine habitats and regions, molecular adaptations and evolution, and conservation and management aspects. Editors are Rogers (marine biologist), Johnson (marine ecologist), Murphy (marine ecologist and ecological modeler) and Clarke (marine ecologist specializing in polar regions). The book is well-written and illustrated, and includes extensive references. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
