This collection of essays on the life and explorations of Zebulon Pike examines the complex career of this soldier and western explorer, and considers his contributions to the young nation's understanding of the southwestern portion of the territories acquired in the Louisiana Purchase, in a variety of contexts . Essays address topics such as geography and cartography, scientific exploration, Native American relations, and diplomacy with Spanish Mexican powers, as well as topics related to Pike's controversial military career, and his place in the pantheon of American explorers.
