Summary:
Tardío (history of political thought and social and political movements, Rey Juan Carlos U., Spain) and Reguillo (history of political thought and social and political movements, Complutense U., Spain) compile 14 essays that analyze the political history of the Spanish Second Republic and the main obstacles to the consolidation of democracy in Spain which led to the Spanish Civil War and 40 years of dictatorship. Spanish, British, US, and Italian historians offer new research and syntheses of conclusions produced by scholars in recent years on the period between 1931 and 1936, aiming to eschew any prejudices and create an open dialogue on the Republic. They emphasize the analysis of politics and the influence of ideological struggles in the debate and conflicts of the period. They place their discussion in the European context, in terms of the period itself and not what occurred afterward, and with the aim of disconnecting history from myths and other biases. They address such topics as whether the Confederación Española de Derechas Autónomas was an opportunity or a threat, the centrist appeal under the Republic, how elections were viewed and conducted, the transformation of fascism, the Communist Party, the politics of exclusion at the local level, the perceived necessity for repression, new perspectives on the Civil Guard, and the role of intellectuals in the Republic.
