Summary:
This collection of seventeen articles on music, youth culture, and education examines global hip hop culture in a variety of academic contexts and explores the concept of critical pedagogy in relation to the genre. The essays are divided into sections covering hip hop as a nexus of revolutionary critique and social transformation and hip hop based education. Individual essays address topics such as Arab American hip hop as cultural action for freedom, local hip hop and the production of grassroots democratic change, spoken word as "literocratic" praxis, and critical education using hip hop modes of knowledge distribution. Contributors are academics in cultural, media, and Africana studies from a variety of universities as well as performers and other professionals working within the hip hop scene.
