- Summary:
- In this impressive survey and analysis, the rich sculptural remains of a large selection of Hindu temples from the 6th-12th centuries are described in conjunction with their attendant inscriptions and in light of religious writings and epic literature that highlight their iconography and use. Throughout, the political connotations of the sculptural groups are also noted, as this can be gleaned from information on local royal patronage and the history of the temples and their architecture and decorative programs. Verma, an independent scholar, carried out the research for this project while a fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Simla, India.
