Summary:
Hispanos are the descendants of the original Spanish/Mexican families that settled in northern New Mexico during the 1800s. In this lively, illustrated study, Korte, a retired professor, uses phenomenology and ethnomethodology to explore Hispano attitudes, values, and spiritual beliefs. The author integrates a variety of sources, from real events to folklore, poetry, film, religious rituals, and scholarly work. Because Korte leads a group for domestic violence offenders, he is particularly interested in stories of domestic violence in Mexican popular music. Other areas explored are the oral tradition in Hispano culture, and roadside crosses and accompanying poetry as remembrances of the dead. Two chapters are devoted to the prison experience. The book includes a glossary of Hispano terms and is illustrated with b&w art by contemporary Hispano artists. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
