Summary:
Having lived and conducted research in Naples from 1998 to 2004, British geographer Dines examines the transformation and redefinition of the Italian city's historic center during the final decade of the 20th century, by focusing on three public spaces. The left-wing city administration sought to reclaim the city's cultural and architectural patrimony to rid it of international notoriety as an urban outcast of Europe, he says. His overall themes are urban change in an ordinary city: Naples during the 1990s; the making of a regeneration symbol: heritage, decorum, and the incursions of the everyday in Piazzo Plebiscito; deprovincializing urban regeneration: Piazza Garibaldi and immigration during the Bassolino era; and an alternative idea of public space: the Centra Sociale in Montesanto.
