Summary:
"The text provides a systematic overview about the cultic, settlement- and socio-political phenomenon of extra-urban sanctuaries in the Cisalpine, from the Iron age to the Roman age and more over. The analysis is based on a synoptic investigation of structures, settlements and landscape, always dialectically compared with the basic interpretation concept of 'romanization', that means non only the imperialistic military-political and cultural enforcement, but also the adherence to a new formulation of community life. In spite of the great quantity of data, reflections and interpretations match together an unitary project: to show the importance of these settlements and the historical, archaeological and anthropological implications which are transmitted all over the territory, proposing in this way a general Cisalpine interpretation model. In conclusion, this work offers an useful summary about the historical-archaeological context of extra-urban sanctuaries in the Cisalpine as an important step in the knowledge not only of the rural population during the Roman age, but also of the phenomenon of cultic and socio-political romanization all over a territory that goes from the Alps to the Apennines, from Piedmont to Istria."--Publisher's website.
