Summary:
Condon (English, U. of Nebraska) and Young (African American studies and English, U. of Nebraska) explore "white readiness for antiracism." Condon warns against uncritical assumptions about racial transcendence on the part of whites, and points out the dilemmas whites face in antiracist activism. He argues for a performative antiracist practice he calls "nuancing" as a mode of listening for way that language and rhetoric carry racial ideology. A final chapter consists of a collection of letters between him and Young, a colleague of his, which are presented as responses to or dialogues about extended "queries" about antiracist topics and issues.
