- Summary:
- To account for the assimilation of Assyria into British culture and its ideological work during the middle of the 19th century, Malley (English, Bishop's U., Canada) explores the rhetorical processes that shaped the cultural assemblage of artifacts into patterns of memorialization. Archaeological trophies brought back from excavations to fill the British Museum were visible signs of symbolic conquests, he says, but correspondence involving high-ranking diplomatic personnel and museum trustees shows how archaeology as an informal resource of empire was also a covert tool for extending Britain's economic and strategic leverage in the Near East in the years leading up to the Crimean War.
