- Summary:
- This anthology explores the socio-economics of oil and gas, looking at intersections between fossil fuel exploitation and the societies in which the drilling is done. It is written by and for academics, and devotes at least as much time to conflicts between Karl Marx and John Stuart Mill as it does to current conflicts on the ground in Nigeria or Scotland. The contributors are professors of sociology, economics, law, and environmental studies; sociology predominates, though the book as a whole has a focus on political science. While the collection addresses issues of serious interest to general readers (the capture of university education by industry, how images are used to tell stories to the public about oil in foreign countries), and it represents a range of perspectives and theories, the tone of the book may limit its use to all but academic readers.
