Summary:
Siegel (clinical psychiatry, University of California, Los Angeles) explores the idea that "the mind emerges at the interface of interpersonal experience and the structure and function of the brain." His conception of mind has three fundamental premises: mind is an embodied and relational process regulating information and energy within and between brains, mind is an emergent property of the whole nervous system distributed in the body, and the maturation of the nervous system and brain are determined by interpersonal relationships. Chapters both present scientific data and develop that data conceptually within the above framework. They explore major areas of human experience: memory, attachment, awareness, representations, self-regulation, integration, emotion, and other states of mind. This second edition is largely unchanged other than updating the data, but includes new sections on gender, temperament, genetics, culture and the neural correlates of consciousness. The book is intended for a wide range audience of academics, clinicians, and others with an interest in the human mind. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
