Summary:
Zubiaurre (Spanish, U. of California, Los Angeles) specializes in 19th- and 20th-century Spanish literature. In an antique store in Madrid she came across an album of erotic photos that led her to further investigation. In this study she explores the erotic currents of Spanish culture that were suppressed under Franco's rule in the years subsequent to those under consideration. Drawing on a variety of materials--magazines, photographs, postcards, short films, writings on sexology and psychoanalysis, and moral treatises and philosophical essays--the author offers a remarkably in-depth cultural analysis. The volume is elegantly produced on coated stock, and, yes, many illustrations are included. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
